IBO 130 pound champion Will Tomlinson (21-0-1, 12 KOs) outscored former IBF world champion Malcolm Klassen (27-6-2, 14 KOs) over twelve roundsat the Melbourne Pavillion, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on Thursday.
Tomlinson was aggressive in all the rounds and dropped Klassen in round one but the South African displayed excellent boxing in rounds five, six and seven connecting with solid head and body shots. In round eight doctor Peter Lewis inspected cuts suffered by the Australian but ruled okay to continue.
Tomlinson stepped up a gear in rounds eleven and twelve and referee Pete Podgorski crowned the Aussie the winner by scores Robert Hoyle 118-109, Garry Dean 118-109, Steve Scott 117-110.
Tomlinson is trained by Lincoln Hudson and managed by Gary Shaw and Fidel Tukel.
WBA#15 Garth Wood (12-3-1, 7 KOs) was impressive in scoring a second round stoppage over Australian based South African Virgil Kalakoda( 24-9-3, 16 KOs) to capture the WBA Pan African middleweight title. Kalakoda visited the canvas and was in trouble in round two when referee Ignatius Missailidis saved him from further punishment at 1.07.
Classy Australian 130 pounder Matt Garlett (11-1, 6 KOs) scored the best win of his career when he was awarded a twelve round decision over South African Sipho Taliwe (20-3-1, 14 KOs) to capture the WBC International title. The fight was evenly contested throughout but the Australian had the better work rate.
