Featherweight Manuel Avila (13-0, 5KOs) shredded Jose Angel Cota (15-10-1, 11KOs) on Monday at the Sports House in Redwood City, Calif., in the main event of a Golden Boy Live! card televised on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes. Avila, from nearby Fairfield, Calif., took his time in the first round as Cota, from Mexicali, Mexico, tried to press the action, but Avila opened up in the second, catching Cota before unleashing a big barrage that had his foe covering, slipping some punches and bloodied before the referee stopped it at 32 seconds of round two.
In the co-main, middleweights Paul Mendez and Louis Rose lumbered along to a split draw. Scores were 96-94 for Mendez, from nearby Fairfield, Calif, 97-93 for Rose, from Los Angeles; and 95-95. Both fighters had little moments of activity, though neither inflicted serious damage or threatened to take control of the fight.
In another televised bout, welterweight Jonathan Chicas (11-1, 4KOs) was a clear winner over Joaquin Chavez (6-11-2, 2KOs). Chicas, from San Francisco, won by scores of 60-54 and 59-55 twice, thanks to a greater work rate, landing more punches and landing the sharper blows, but Chavez, from Los Angeles, came to fight and had more than a few moments of success.
