Avila gets past Quevedo in Salinas

Unbeaten featherweight Manuel “Tino” Avila (14-0, 5 KOs) scored a hard fought ten round unanimous decision over Enrique “Cuate” Quevedo (15-7-1, 9 KOs) on Monday night at the Storm House in Salinas, California. Quevedo gave Avila all he could handle, but Avila closed strong by knocking down Quevedo with a left hook in the final minute. Scores were 97-92 on all cards.

Middleweight Paul “El Gallo Negro” Mendez moved to 15-2-2, 7 KOs with a third round KO against Raul “El Tigre” Casarez (20-5, 9 KOs). A right hand finished Casarez. Time was :43.

Unbeaten lightweight Andy Vences (7-0, 3 KOs) won when Dominic Coca (8-7, 2 KOs) couldn’t continue after round three due to a hand injury.

19-year-old Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya (3-0, 3 KOs) scored a first round TKO over Sergio “Costeño” Najera (6-13-2, 1 KO). De La Hoya dropped Najera with a left hook and got the stoppage with his follow up barrage. Time was 2:14. Diego is the cousin of boxing great Oscar De La Hoya,
