Dulorme destroys Ambriz

Unbeaten welterweight Thomas Dulorme backed up the hype surrounding him with a first round annihilation over late sub Aris Ambriz in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, CA. Dulorme, who is co-promoted by Gary Shaw and Lou DiBella, was hoping to build upon a dominating 10 round unanimous decision over former world title holder DeMarcus Corley in June and a nine round decision over Charlie Navarro. Ambriz took the fight on a week’s notice, after original opponent Jose Reynoso suffered a hip injury and Terrance Cauthen dropped out of the fight. Dulorme dropped Ambriz to the canvas with a left hook to the head. Ambriz got up, but was met with a barrage of punches. A barrage of punches dropped Ambriz to the canvas. Referee David Mendoza waved the fight over at 2:12. With the victory, Dulorme won a regional title belt.

“I received a present in the first round with the knockdown, but I was mentally and physically prepared to fight 10 rounds,” said Dulorme, who trained alongside Marcos Maidana for Friday night’s fight. “The opportunity was there to go for the knockout, so I took it. I will be back in the gym on Monday.”

Dulorme, from Carolina, Puerto Rico, improves to 14-0, 11 KOs. Ambriz, who was fighting his significant bout at the welterweight limit, drops to 16-3-1, 8 KOs.

Hard-hitting junior welterweight Jonathan Gonzalez won a hard-fought 10 round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Billy Lyell. Lyell caught Gonzalez’s attention with a counter right cross to the head. However, the taller Gonzalez, who won a one-sided 10 round unnaimous decision over Richard Gutierrez in his last fight, was able to put his punches together, landing strong combinations to the head. Lyell, who last year lost two 10 round decisions to Dominik Britsch and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., attempted to counter with right hands to the head and body, finding some success. In the second half of the fight, Gonzalez began to slow down, fighting in spurts while Lyell increased pressed forward and began to let his hands go. Lyell countered effectively with to the head of Gonzalez in the eighth and ninth rounds. Just when it looked as though Lyell had the momentum, Gonzalez finished strong by dominating the 10th round over a tiring Lyell. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Gonzalez, with scores of 97-93, 97-93, and 98-92. Fightnews.com scored the bout 96-94 in favor of Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, from San Juan, Puerto Rico, goes to 15-0, 13 KOs. Lyell, from Youngstown, OH, drops to 24-11-2, 5 KOs.

Junior featherweight Roman Morales dropped Ernie Marquez a total of five times, before the bout was halted in the fourth round of a scheduled six round bout. After a tactical opening round, Morales dropped Marquez with a counter right hand to the head in the second round. In the third round, Morales dropped Marquez down twice within a span of 30 seconds, both times with right hands to the head. Although Marquez fought back bravely, he kept dropping his hands, exposing him to get hit by Morales. In the fourth round, Morales dropped Marquez with a counter right cross to the head. Later in the round, Morales landed a right-left combination to the head, dropping Marquez face first to the canvas. Referee David Mendoza immediately waved the fight over at 2:23. Morales, from San Ardo, CA, improves to 9-0, 6 KOs, while the normally-durable Marquez, from Fort Morgan, CO, falls to 9-10-2, 3 KOs.

Featherweight Rufino Serrano of nearby Santa Maria won a six round unanimous decision over Rodrigo Aranda. Serrano used his quickness to keep his distance away from his Aranda. However, Aranda was able to occasionally land to the head with uppercuts or a hook to the body. However, Serrano (12-3) consistently landed with right hands to the head of Aranda, even though the fight became sloppier as the bout progressed. Serrano was deducted a point by referee David Mendoza in the sixth round for a low blow. Mendoza had previously warned Serrano earlier in the fight for low blows. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Serrano with scores of 59-54, 59-54, and 57-56. Fightnews.com scored the bout 58-55 in favor of Serrano. Aranda, from Las Vegas, NV by way of Tabasco, Mexico, falls to 8-17-2, 2 KOs.

Roy Tapia scored a devastating one-punch stoppage over Brice Yoeneke in the first round of a scheduled four round junior featherweight bout. Tapia landed a left hook to the head of Yoeneke, dropping him to the canvas. Referee Marcos Rosales immediately waved the fight over at 2:34. Tapia, from East Los Angeles, CA by way of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, improves to 3-0, 2 KOs. Yoeneke, who had not fought in almost two years, falls to 0-6.

Featherweight Azat Hovahannesyan of Glendale, CA stopped William Fisher in the fourth and final round. After an even first round, Hovahannesyan repeatedly landed to the head of Fisher in the second and third rounds. Hovahannesyan (2-1, 2 KOs) stunned Fisher numerous times with right hands to the head, as Fisher tried to hold on. By the end of the third round, Fisher, from Moreno Valley, CA, had a large bruise underneath his right eye, due to the amount of punches he was receiving. In the fourth round, Hovahannesyan dropped Fisher with a straight counter right hand to the head. Fisher stood up, but was met with a barrage of punches, prompting referee Marcos Rosales to stop the bout at 2:43.
