In a bout for the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title, unbeaten Australian Lucas Browne (20-0, 18 KOs) scored a fifth round KO over Canadian Eric Martel Bahoeli (10-4, 7 KOs) on Saturday night at the Ponds Forge Arena in Sheffield, England. Browne dropped Bahoeli in round two with a big right hand. Brown was cut over the left eye by a head clash in round three and his face was a mask of blood when he went back to his corner. Browne battered Bahoeli to the deck again after a violent exchange in round four. Browne bludgeoned Bahoeli down again in the fifth for the count. Time was 1:26. Browne becomes the first Aussie to hold the Commonwealth heavyweight belt since 1892.
Russian bantamweight Zhanat Zhakiyanov (22-1, 15 KOs) dethroned defending European champion Karim Guerfi (20-3, 5 KOs) with a one-punch fifth round KO. A Zhakiyanov right hand finished Guerfi.
