Retired Irish boxers return to the ring to fight cancer

The second annual “Battle at the Bay” charity boxing event returns tonight to the Dorchester Armory in Dorchester, MA. In a special showcase exhibition, former welterweight and jr. middleweight contender Sean “The Galway Gouger” Mannion (42-14-1) of Galway, Ireland – who challenged Mike McCallum for the world title – will step back into the ring against former New England and super middleweight champion Mike Culbert (30-4) of Belfast, Ireland. The “Battle at the Bay” – a fundraiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston – is organized by former Irish amateur boxer Mark Porter, a cancer survivor.

“Eight years ago, I was told I had cancer,” stated Porter. “I had three small children, a business, and a life. Through Dana Farber, I was treated successfully and have had a clean bill of health since.”

Porter, who was born in Donegal, Ireland, but now makes his home in Quincy, MA, has raised over $200,000 for cancer research at the world-acclaimed hospital. Last year’s show raised $52,000 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

The event will also feature 15 “white collar” amateur bouts plus former middleweight contender Sean “The Irish Express” Fitzgerald will be at ringside.

Doors open at 6p and the first bout is scheduled for 7p. A donation of $25 is suggested. For more info, call 617 719 6729 or 508 746 0176
