Review: Third Man in the Ring

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Recently published “Third Man in the Ring” by authors Mike Fitzgerald and Patrick Morley gives the reader personal experiences in the ring of 33 of the worlds outstanding referees which include Mills Lane, Wayne Kelly, Kenny Bayless, Bruce McTavish, Randy Neumann, Steve Smoger, Mickey Vann, Pat Russell, Jack Reiss, Pete Podgorski, Richard Steele, Carlos Padilla, Denny Nelson, Mark Nelson, Phil Austin, Eddie Cotton, Rudy Battle and Robert Byrd.

Officiating a professional boxing match can be a thankless job. When a match goes well, no one focuses on the referee. But when a controversy arises, everyone remembers the man who made the call. “Third Man in the Ring” explores what goes on inside the ropes as referees recount the disputes and clashes that have occurred when they worked at home and abroad.

Author Mike Fitzgerald has authored five previous boxing books including former heavyweight champion Ken Norton “Going the Distance” (2000) and boxing’s knockout leader Archie Moore biography, “The Ageless Warrior” (2004) Fitzgerald has been a licenced professional judge since 1992 and has officiated title bouts in Australia, South Africa and North Korea. He lives in Janesville, Wisconsin with his wife, Deb, and son, Ross and his daughter, Allie.

Patrick Morley is an attorney in Chicago, where he resides with wife, Chantall. Pat is a former Chicago police officer and sergeant. He also a licenced professional boxing and mixed martial arts judge who has officiated world title bouts in both sports.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
