Coming into the fight, Beaumont native DeShaun Williams was extremely confident that he would be the first one was to give Brownsville’s Juan Reyna that first loss of his perfect professional record. However, he wasn’t able to meet his ultimate goal as Reyna (4-0, 2 KO’s) kept his undefeated record in hand by defeating Williams by unanimous decision in the six-round main event of Borderwars: The Heat Is On Saturday night at the Casa De Amistad.
“The reason I was able to win this fight is because I out boxed him,” said Reyna. “He made a lot of mistakes and was showboating a lot during the fight. While he was doing that, I was throwing a lot of punches that were connecting.”
“I am glad to get the win and having all of the support out here tonight is the greatest feeling in the world.”
After two sluggish rounds, both Williams and Reyna came out swinging in the third round. Reyna eventually caught Williams (3-7) with an uppercut to the body; however it was an apparent low blow which caused the referee to give Reyna a warning.
Reyna threw his best shot of the fight as he connected with a straight right to the face of Williams which stunned him in the fourth round.
Reyna stunned Williams again in the fifth round with an uppercut to the head area. After Williams regained his composure, he encouraged Reyna to keep coming at him and continued to showboat.
The referee finally had enough of Williams’s showboating as he deducted a point in the sixth round. Williams was furious for the point being deducted and tried to make a late surge as he attempted to take out Reyna. But, Reyna was able to duck and move and counter with punches that landed.
In the co-main event, Mexico’s Ivan Ceron (1-1) pulled off a huge upset as he defeated undefeated prospect Oscar Tovar Jr. by 4th round TKO.
Clearly losing the fight, Ceron came out with guns blazing as he dropped Tovar Jr. (4-1) with a right hook early in the fourth round. Tovar was able to answer the standing eight-count and tried to continue.
However, Ceron kept applying the pressure and Tovar Jr. wasn’t able to weather the storm as the referee finally stepped in and stopped the fight at the 1:44 mark of the fourth round.
“My trainers told me to move and throw everything if I was going to win this fight,” said Ceron. “I have to give thanks to God for the victory.”
In other action, Angel Hernandez of McAllen improved to 4-1 as he defeated Alberto Navarro (0-2-1) of Kingsville by unanimous decision and Hector Gutierrez (1-2) won his first professional fight as he scored a unanimous decision victory over Brownsville’s Carlos Orenday.
San Benito’s Abel Fonseca (1-3-1) looked impressive as he picked up his first professional victory by defeating Edinburg native Gino Hernandez (0-7) by unanimous decision in the opening bout of the evening.
“It’s an awesome feeling to finally get my first win,” said Fonseca. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time and all of the hard work and dedication finally paid off.”
