Newly crowned WBO junior lightweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez received his belt last night during a show held at El San Juan Resort & Casino in Isla Verde, Carolina, Puerto Rico. Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KOs), who won the title by split decision over Miguel Beltran Jr. on September 15 in Las Vegas, got his belt from the hands of the WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel in an activity as part of the card where Female World Champion Yesica Bopp and WBO Latino Champion McWilliams Arroyo defended their titles. “I’m very proud to become a world champion again. It was a good fight against a good foe as Beltran and I want to keep this belt long time. I’m going to start hard training soon,” Martinez said. Valcarcel said that Martinez is going to make a mandatory defense against the best ranked Mexican Juan Carlos Burgos in December 2012 or January 2013.
