France’s top boxing prospect Romain Jacob won the IBF Youth jr lightweight title last Friday in his native city of Calais with an impressive fifth round TKO over Mexican Martin Cardona. Both young men stepped into the ring unbeaten but the 24 year-old Jacob (19-0, 7 KOs) took command of the fight from the first round, punishing the 21-year-old Cardona (17-1, 12 KOs) with consistent body punching. The game young Mexican was knocked down in the fourth round and again in the fifth with punishing blows to the liver, forcing the referee to stop the uneven contest.

Jacob is the son of former WBC featherweight champion Thierry Jacob and his four uncles won French and European titles. Declared young Romain after the fight, “Winning an international crown is a big step for me but I still have a long way to go to equal my Dad or my uncles. I hope this win will help me get into the top 15 ranking. Carrying the Jacob name is a great motivator in my career.”
