Middleweight Troy Rowland continued his comeback on Saturday night with a unanimous 6 round decision win at the Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids, MI, but unlike his first fight back, this one was far from easy. Opponent Dave Saunders of Cincinnati and head trainer Jeff “Cobra” McCall expressed confidence before the bout with their game plan to stay on the offensive and press Rowland. The action heated up immediately and Troy emerged from a clinch near the end of the first round with blood streaming down his face from a cut over his left eye. “The butt threw me off my plan a bit” related Rowland. “The blood was getting into my eye and I got a little over anxious in the second round.” As Saunders continued to press the action, Rowland settled and took control in the third. Rowland’s corner did a good job with the cut although it continued to bleed for the rest of the bout. Troy also suffered a bloody nose in the fifth round but returned the favor as Saunders nose ran red in the sixth. Rowland closed the bout strong to win by scores of 58-56 x 2 and 59-55 to improve his record to (25-2, 7 KOs). Saunders falls to (9-8).

In an ugly heavyweight bout Alex Otero, (3-8) managed to land a few more punches in between the wrestling and clinching to best John Smith (1-6) over 4 rounds by scores of 39-37 x 2 and 39-38. This one was not easy on the eyes, but Otero’s hometown fans were ecstatic with the outcome.

In an excellent junior middleweight contest, Roberto Florentino (4-5, 3) scored a unanimous 4 round decision (39-37 x 2, 40-36) over Bert Compton, (0-2). Fast and furious exchanges throughout had the big crowd voicing their approval.

Rod Jacobs simply ran out of gas and was stopped at 2:17 of the fourth round by local Jackie Beard (5-9, 5 KOs) in a heavyweight match up. The fight was close and Jacobs started the fourth with a big flurry that may have carried the day for him until his tank ran dry. Jacobs is now (1-9).

Other results of promoters Carlos Llinas International Productions (CLIP) and Blue Cap Promotions card:

Derron Hernandez, TKO 1 (:57) over Mike Fitzgerald, welterweights.
Hernandez, (3-0, 2 KOs) had decked Fitzgerald, (0-4), early in the first. Mike got up shakily but seemed to have his legs under him and was fighting back when his corner surprisingly and prematurely tossed in a towel.

Alejo Sepulveda, (3-1, 1 KO) won a 4 round decision over Guy Packer (3-24-2) in a junior middleweight bout by scores of 38-37 x 2, 40-35. Referee Patrick Schmidt penalized Packer a point in the final round for holding, costing Guy the majority draw.

Junny Troche (1-0), scored a first round knockout at 2:25 over Eric Rue, (0-4), when Rue decided to ride out referee Sean Curtin’s ten count. Rue had also been down earlier in the round. Junior welterweights.

Lane Staal went to (2-0) pitching a shutout over 4 rounds (40-36 x 3) vs Jamie Castellano, (4-21) in a spirited contest that opened the show.
