Sabaupan, Jaro to invade Puerto Rico

Filipinos Al Sabaupan and Sonny Boy Jaro will face Puerto Ricans Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez and McWilliams Arroyo on February 2 at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, where former two time world champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez will return to the ring in a PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) presentation in association with Top Rank. “These (Sabaupan and Jaro) will be good foes for Chelo Gonzalez and McWilliams Arroyo. There are hard tests for them,” PRBBP Vice-President Peter Rivera said.

Chelo Gonzalez (21-0, 16 KOs), who is ranked #1 by the WBO in the lightweight division, will defend his WBO Latino lightweight title for the fourth time against Al Sabaupan (20-1-1, 15 KOs) in a fight scheduled to 12 rounds. Sabaupan is a 24 year old southpaw, whose only defeat was against contender Marvin Quintero. Sabaupan is ranked #9 by the IBF in the lightweights and #15 by the WBO in the junior welter division.

Meanwhile, McWilliams Arroyo (13-1, 11 KOs), the #6 WBO ranked in the flyweights, also will defend his WBO Latino flyweight belt versus the former world champion Sonny Boy Jaro (34-11-5, 24 KOs) in a 12 round bout. Jaro lost his WBC flyweight title in July, 2012, in a split decision against Toshiyuki Igarashi. Actually, Jaro is ranked #4 by the WBC in the flyweights.

Headlining the show Juanma Lopez (31-2, 28 KOs) will face Aldimar Silva Santos (18-3, 9 KOs), from Brazil, in a fight scheduled to 10 rounds in 128 pounds. Lopez is the #5 ranked by the WBO in the featherweight division.

Rivals for the McJoe Arroyo (11-0, 6 KOs), the #9 WBO ranked in the superflyweights, and Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez (11-0, 10 KOs), the #12 WBO ranked in the flyweights, title fights, will be announced this week.

For 18 years, Fightnews.com® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
