In a war between unbeaten minimumweights, WBO champion Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo (23-0-1, 12 KOs) and Carlos “Chocoroncito” Buitrago (27-0-1, 16 KOs) battled to a split draw on Saturday night at the famed Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines (site of the historic “Thrilla in Manila”). It was all action from the opening bell with both fighters having their moments. Buitrago had Sabillo in trouble in in round nine, but the champion recovered and it was give and take the rest of the way. In the end scores were 115-113 Buitrago, 115-113 Sabillo, 114-114.
WBO junior flyweight champion Donnie Nietes (32-1-4, 18 KOs) scored a third round KO over faded former WBA champion Samuel “Guty” Gutierrez (33-10-2, 23 KOs). Nietes dropped Gutierrez twice in round one and finished him with another knockdown in the third. Time was 2:58.
Flyweight contender Milan Melindo (30-1, 12 KOs) hammered out a twelve round unanimous decision over Jose Rodriguez (29-3, 18 KOs) to claim the vacant WBO international flyweight title.
Junior welterweight Jason Pagara (32-2, 19 KOs) outpointed Vladimir Baez (19-2-2, 17 KOs) to retain his WBO international belt.
Featherweight AJ Banal (30-2-1, 21 KOs) outpointed Manuel Gonzalez (16-8-2, 5 KOs) over ten.
