Sabillo wants to make a statement in first title defense

By Chito Yu Katangkatang

“I want to show everybody that I am a legitimate champion and that I will reign as such for a long time contrary to what some say that I am a one hit wonder and a paper champ.” This was the first statement of Undefeated WBO Minimumweight King Merlito “El Tigre” Sabillo (22-0, 11 KOs) in an exclusive interview with “Boxing has changed my life. I was able to pay all the loans of my parents especially during the time of my deceased mother’s sickness. My father and siblings are living a better life because of the sport. But above anything else, I love boxing and becoming a world champion is my greatest dream. Now that I am here, I won’t just let go of my belt that easy. People who have seen me fight knows what kind of warrior I am. I will make a statement in my first title defense tomorrow, and Jorle Estrada will pay for his own trashtalks!”

“My coaches at ALA Gym have tried to work my defense. I admit I am a very offensive fighter. Offense is my best defense. But I need to make adjustments. I can’t let my opponent keep on hitting me. I have learned to move around and cover up. I have improved my defense and they will see that come fight night.”

“I thank God for making my dreams come true. I am a world champion now. I work so hard during training and I am determined to keep this belt for a very long time just like my predecessor Donnie Nietes. I want to prove my detractors wrong and let them know that I deserve this belt. Please watch my fight and support all Filipino fighters”, Sabillo said in conclusion.

Note: The author wishes to thank Mr. Glenn Estrada for the interview video and photos.
