Sal Sanchez remembrance on Sunday

By Gabriel F. Cordero

Formers world champions Lupe Pintor, Ruben “Puas” Olivares and Rafael “Bazooka” Limon among others will be in attendance at an event to commemorate 30 years since the death of Mexican ring legend Salvador Sanchez to be held in Santiago Tianguistenco in Mexico State on Sunday. That day a Mass will be held in the Cathedral of Santiago, Tianguestenco, then there will be a breakfast at the Miguel Hidalgo Auditorium and at 3PM there will be an amateur boxing card arranged by the Retired Mexican Fighters Association.

“For the WBC, Salvador Sanchez is one of the best, a legend and a good example for many fighters,” said WBC President Jose Sulaiman. “His death was a big blow to Mexico and to boxing. He was very young and did his best during his 10 world title fights, full of emotion and great shows. We miss him very much and this is a mandatory event to remember him after 30 years.”

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
