San Diego fight preview

By Felipe Leon

The table is set for Bobby D Presents Thursday night’s “San Diego Fights” fight card slated for the home of San Diego boxing, The Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Kearny Mesa, a suburb of “America’s Finest City”. Promoter Bobby DePhilippis will feature hometown favorite Emmanuel “Renegade” Robles (8-0-1, 3KOs) as he puts up his undefeated record against the experienced Arturo Brambila (9-19-1, 4KOs) of Phoenix, AZ, in the light welterweight six round main event.

Robles is coming off his most exciting and biggest win to date when behind on the cards, he impressively stopped hard hitting Joshua Marks in the fourth round last April. After having some trouble deciphering Marks’ style, Robles landed a hard body shot early in the fourth which led to him scoring a barrage of punches later in the round as he beat Marks from pillar to post. The third man in the ring, David Mendoza, was forced to halt the action. Now Brambila stands in Robles’ way to bigger and better things but the Arizona native is looking to pull the upset. Brambila, a veteran of nearly 30 fights compared to Robles’ 9, has faced the much better opposition in the likes of former champion Antonio DeMarco, current interim champion Mike Alvarado and owns over former prospect Sven Paris who was 22-1 when Brambila derailed his ascend.

In the co-main event, hard hitting Maurice “Mo” Hooker (9-0-1, 7KOs) takes on Tijuana tough guy Mario “Popeyin” Hermosillo (12-10-3, 2KOs) in also a light welterweight six rounder. The contest will mark the first time that Hooker performs in the west coast and together with his team chose San Diego because of the knowledge of the southern California boxing fans. In Hermosillo he will face a come forward slugger who is coming off a six round unanimous decision win over Ulises Duarte.

Also featured on Thursday night will be the undefeated “Third Generation” Leon Spinks III (5-0-1, 3KOs) when he faces fellow unbeaten Jesus Aguinaga (1-0) in a lightweight four round contest. Spinks III is the grandson of former gold medal Olympian and heavyweight champion “Neon” Leon Spinks. In 1978 Spinks, with only seven professional fights, defeated the great Muhammad Ali to capture the heavyweight title.

In a special attraction, former Olympian alternate and Vista, CA, native featherweight Aaron ”Gavilan” Garcia (11-3-2, 3KOs) returns to the ring after his spectacular first round stoppage of Ensenada’s Cesar Garcia last May. After nearly a two year hiatus, Garcia came back to the sweet science and proved that he meant busy by stopping the usually durable Cesar in the first stanza with a brutal body shot that fractured his opponent’s rib. Garcia will go four rounds or less against Johnny Frazier (2-16-4, 2KOs).

Three more fights flesh out the card.
