From the O2 Arena in London, TUF Season One middleweight winner Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez won a hard-fought unanimous decision over TUF 3 welterweight winner Joe “Daddy” Stevenson in a lightweight battle. Fighting for the first time at 155 pounds, Sanchez entered on a two fight win streak, and capitalized on a strong first round to make it three with a nod via 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 scores.
In other action Nottingham’s Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy pleased the home crowd with a knockout victory over Rory Markham at 1:02 of the first round. In a battle of middleweight contenders Nate “The Great” Marquardt finished a worn and beaten Wilson Gouveia by TKO at 3:10 of the final stanza. Undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom Demian Maia easily submitted former WEC title challenger Chael Sonnen via first round triangle choke. With the victory Maia has won all five of his UFC bouts by submission; three of those in the first round. Also welterweight hopefully Josh Koscheck was upset by undefeated Paolo Thiago who made his UFC debut by first round stoppage, a stoppage disputed by Koscheck.
In off-TV bouts, it was Paul Kelly over Troy Mandaloniz by unanimous decision; Mike Ciesnolevics won via first round heel hook over Neil Grove; Evan Dunham TKO’d Per Eklund in round one; Junior dos Santos TKO’d Stefan Struve in :54; and Terry Etim won by Tko over Brian Cobb at :10 of round two.
