Godfrey-Cunningham off?

The clash for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title between Steve Cunningham and Matt Godfrey, originally slated for a March 26 Don King card in Las Vegas, then announced as rescheduled by ESPN (switched to a Dominic Pesoli card in Chicago on the same date), still appears to be a no go according to the Godfrey camp. Apparently Team Godfrey terminated training upon news that the fight was off last week. “Our IBF cruiserweight title fight is off,” says Godfrey’s trainer “Iceman” John Scully. “If they had told us, ‘Look the Vegas fight is off but keep focused, keep training, and let us go to work and we will see if we can find a new venue,’ then, no problem, we would have sucked it up and stayed on course. But this was not the case…we were told the fight is OFF. Period. There is a huge difference there.” A knowledgeable source that prefers to remain unnamed insists Cunningham-Godfrey is still on. Stay tuned…

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
