Renowned boxing trainer Fritz Sdunek has stepped down from his duties at Universum Box-Promotions. The 62-year-old trainer informed promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl of his decision today.
“On account of the state of my health, I would like to reduce my workload as a professional trainer and only look after Vitali Klitschko for the time being,” said Sdunek. “I’ve recovered well from my hip operation in January, but the other hip still needs to be operated on. This is why I want to finish my collaboration with Universum for the time being. Once I’ve gotten past everything and if the need is there, we can gladly speak about another collaboration. After 16 successful years, it hasn’t been easy for me to make this decision. On Saturday, it would have been 16 years here. Of course, I’ll still be available to all the boxers and trainers for help and advice, and will show up often in the gym. Now I wish Universum and all the boxers a lot of success and health in the future. And, of course, the necessary good luck also!“
“Fritz Sdunek told me he no longer had the necessary energy to look after several boxers,” said Universum chief Klaus-Peter Kohl. “Of course we accept this, even though it’s a great loss for us. I thank Fritz for the great work he has done in the past 16 years for us. We wish him all the best for the future, above all health! I’m very glad that Fritz received the warning from the doctors that, finally, he should take care of himself more. We’ve agreed that when Fritz has got over everything and he feels new strength, we can talk about everything.”
Universum trainers Michael Timm, Magomed Schaburow and Artur Grigorian will take over Sdunek’s workload. Sdunek has trained 13 of Universum’s 37 world champions to date.
