Seldom seen Guillermo Jones to try to get his title back from Denis Lebedev tonight

By Gabriel F. Cordero

Panamanian WBA world cruiserweight champion in recess Guillermo “El Felino” Jones and Russian WBA regular world champion Denis Lebedev are set to crown the absolute WBA cruiserweight champion tonight at the Crocus Circus Hall in Moscow, Russia

The 41-year-old Jones (38-3-2, 30 KOs) won the title against Firat Arslan in September 2008, then went 25 months before defending it against Valery Brudov in October 2010. Another 13 months passed before his November 2011 defense against Mike Marrone. Since then, Jone has been out of the ring for another 20 months.

Lebedev (25-1-0, 19 KOs) was elevated from interim to full champion in October 2012 at the WBA convention in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Jones was reclassified as “champion in recess” due to his lack of activity.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.
