Sergio Martinez out until June?

By Gabriel F. Cordero

A source has informed that WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez may be out of the ring until June of next year and only return to training in February. This means mandatory challenger Marco Antonio Rubio, who was expecting his title shot in March or April would have to wait for the WBC make a decision in this new Martinez situation. The source indicates that the June date likely increases the possibility that Martinez will face three-time world champion Miguel Cotto. It was agreed at the last WBC Convention that Martinez has until December 15th to inform the WBC where the rehabilitation on his hand and knee injuries stands. If Martinez will still be out for an extended time, the Rubio camp wants to fight for an interim title.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.
