Sergio Martinez WBC title update

By Gabriel F. Cordero

A source has told that a meeting between WBC President Jose Sulaiman and WBC middleweight world champion Sergio Martinez is scheduled for Thursday June 27th in Mexico City. The topic of discussion is the status of Martinez after an injury to his left fist suffered during his April bout against Martin Murray in Argentina. If Martinez indicates that he must go an extended period without fighting, the WBC Board of Governors would convene and decide on a course of action. A box-off among the top four available contenders could occur or possibly a title interim vacancy could occur.

Recently Oswaldo Kuchle, Promociones del Pueblo director told that he insists that his fighter the Marco Antonio “Veneno” Rubio, the current number one contender in the middleweight division, have the first option on any of the decisions that the WBC makes.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.
