Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson Update

By Gabriel F. Cordero

WBC super featherweight mandatory challenger Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (27-2, 25 KOs) is optimistic and focused on his world title challenge on August 17 against current WBC champion Takashi Miura (25-2-2, 19 KOs) in the bullring in Cancun on an event organized by Cancun Boxing/Pepe Gomez. Thompson is training in Santa Fe Springs, California, with trainer Clemente Medina and close to his compatriot WBC featherweight world champion Abner Mares. Via telephone on Tuesday, Thompson said “I’m doing my training with sparring southpaws but very technical and tactical. It’s the best time of my career and for the past seven years I’ve been dreaming about this opportunity and I’m pretty sure I’ll win and not fail this opportunity in my own hometown. The American boxing style helps me to have more movement and defense and I hope change many things in my style. However my heart will continue like a warrior.”

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
