Filipino 130 pounder Ryan Sermona (17-3,10KO’s) caused upset when he scored a fifth round KO over previously unbeaten Roberto Gonzales (20-1, 15KO’s) to capture IBF Pan Pacific Youth title in beautiful resort Island of Puerto Galeria, Mindoro, Oriental, Philippines on Sunday. Gonzales who was born on Puerto Galeria Island was the superior boxer in rounds one and two as he used clever footwork and accurate combination punching to outscore the aggressive Sermona. In round three Sermona stepped up a gear attacking Gonzales but was met by fierce resistance of Gonzales, who staggered his opponent repeatedly. Round four had Sermona bleeding profusely from above the right eye as Gonzales picked him off with jarring left jabs. The ringside doctor visited Sermona’s corner at the conclusion of the round but he was ruled okay to continue. Round five had Sermona digging deep and continually attacking Gonzales and at 1.28 of the fifth round dropped Gonzales with a left hand bomb and referee Bruce McTavish crowned Sermona the new IBF regional champion.
