Sikhulile Sidzumo a former South African lightweight champion won the vacant SA junior welterweight title on a split decision over Mzolisi Yoyo at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday afternoon. Two judges scored the fight 117-111 and 115-114 for Sidzumo and the third judge handed in a rather surprising card of 115-113 for Yoyo, who did not do enough work to deserve the decision.
In a fight that never rose to any heights Sidzumo (63.30kg) appeared rather tight and was punching short throughout the first six rounds whilst Yoyo (63.30kg) spent most of the bout on the back foot running away, and was warned for holding on occasions by referee Lulama Mtya.
The stocky Sidzumo 17-3-4; 11 picked up the pace from round seven and possibly won eight, nine, ten and eleven by close margins but appeared to tire in the last round which was possibly shaded by Yoyo whose record coming into the ring was announced as 18-3, 16.
