Smichet hangs them up

By Dave Spencer/Fightnews Canada

After an eight year and thirty fight career, Montreal middleweight Walid Smichet has called it a day and announced his retirement. The tough Tunisian born fighter finishes his career with a 20-7-3 (14KO) mark and managed to capture the Canadian title in 2007 and was involved in more than his fair share of exciting fights. A last minute knockout of previously unbeaten Matt O’Brien embodied the no quit attitude he brought to the ring each and every time. Fans outside Canada best know the come-forward fighter for his war with John Duddy in Madison Square Garden, the only time he fought outside Canada, losing a narrow majority decision. “Walid Smichet always showed courage inside the ring and was able to deliver spectacular performances,” said promoter Yvon Michel of the fighter he promoted for twenty-five fights. “On behalf of the entire GYM team and myself personally I thank him for being associated with us and wish him luck in his future projects.”
