Former IBF fenale welterweight champion Daniela Smith (12-3) scored a close decision over Lauryn Eagle (5-3-1, 3 KOs) of Australia over six rounds at the Waitakere Trust Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday. Smith controlled the action in the early rounds as she connected with solid left jabs and power right crosses. Eagle stepped up a gear in rounds five and six but referee Lance Reville crowned Smith the winner by unanimous decision. Scores were 59-56, 58-57, 58-56.
Eagle will be challenging for the Australian title on the Daniel Geale vs. Anthony Mundine IBF middleweight promotion on January 30, 2013 in Sydney.
Lauryn Eagle is a former Miss Universe Entrant and a world water ski champion. Smith captured the world title in 2010 when she dominated Germany’s Jennifer Retzke over ten rounds and lost the title in 2011 when South Africa’s Noni Tenge stopped Smith in four rounds.
Legendary Broadcaster Colonel Bob Sheridan called the the fight that was televised on pay-per-view television throughout New Zealand. Promoter was Dean Lonergan.
