Smokin’ Joe to be honored in SC

Former heavyweight champion Smokin’ Joe Frazier will receive The Order of the Palmetto from Governor Mark Sanford tinight at 6pm at The Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in Beaufort, SC. The Order of the Palmetto is the highest civilian award bestowed by the State of South Carolina. It is the highest honor given to those individuals who have exhibited a lifetime of service and achievement. Frazier was born in Beaufort, SC, and lived there for 16 years before moving to Philadelphia to train for his now legendary pro boxing career.Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers, longtime Madison Square Garden photographer George Kalinsky and artist Leroy Neiman are among those expected to attend.
