In a thrilling IBF middleweight elimination bout, Sam Soliman clearly outpointed Giovanni Lorenzo over twelve rounds on Friday in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The bout was evenly contested for the first half but by round six Soliman had stepped up the tempo and was outworking the hard-punching and aggressive Lorenzo. Lorenzo was staggered in the later rounds by accurate combinations of Soliman and in round twelve, the New York-based Lorenzo was dropped and in trouble but survived to hear the final bell. Scores were 117-110, 118-108, 118-109.
Soliman said, “I want to thank my trainer Dave Hedgecock and all my team. Giovanni was a very tough opponent and I thank him and his team for coming to Australia for this fight.” The promoter was Dave Stanley.
