Soliman: I would defeat Cotto and GGG

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman talks to Fightnews to say he doesn’t think his fight against Felix Sturm was his best performance and that he would be confident in defeating Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin and Martin Murray..

You boxed at your brilliant best to defeat Felix Sturm to capture the IBF title in Germany. Was that your best ever performance?

The win over Felix Sturm was one of my best but I regard my performance in winning over Raymond Joval better. He was IBO champion and I defeated him by scores of 120-108. Sturm has been a great world champion and defended the title successfully many times. He was also unlucky when he boxed Oscar De La Hoya in losing by disputed decision when most thought he won.

Your management has been made an offer to defend the IBF title against Martin Murray, who held Felix Sturm to a draw and lost a disputed decision to Sergio Martinez. Your thoughts on Martin Murray?

I have watched tapes of Murray’s fights many times. Martin Murray showed against Sturm he’s one of the best middleweights in the world. Murray is durable and a big middleweight. He is also younger so he ticks all the boxes but so did Felix Sturm and I showed in our two fights I was superior. I would be confident of defeating Martin Murray but I’d have to prepare like I did for the Sturm fight.

WBA champion Gennady Golovkin defends against fellow Aussie Daniel Geale on July 26. Can Geale defeat GGG? Your thoughts?

Golovkin will start favorite to win but he should not take Geale to be an easy victory. If Golovkin allows Geale to box his fight GGG would be in for a dificult fight. The same could happen to Geale if he tries to punch with Golovkin. That would be a mistake for Geale. My prediction is the fight will go the distance but victory will go to Geale if he fights to the right fight plan.

One thing I do know, if ever I fight Golovkin I would be confident of winning. Boxing is about styles and I have the style to win. My manager Dave Stanley has contacted Golovkin’s management and I am hopeful that fight could eventuate. It would be a great opportunity to test myself against the middleweight everyone rates as the best.

Miguel Cotto scored a major upset to stop Sergio Martinez to capture the WBC title last Saturday. Is Cotto on your radar? Would you be confident of victory?

That was a big upset. Sergio Martinez has been my idol in boxing for several years as well as Pernell Whitaker. Cotto boxed the best fight of his career to win over a legend. A unification IBF and WBC middleweight bout would be a fight I would welcome. Miguel Cotto showed he has good power at 160 pounds but I think I have the style and work rate to cause him problems. I’d love to avenge his win over Sergio. Hoping Top Rank will make that fight.

Fellow Aussie middleweight Jarrod Fletcher will challenge Daniel Jacobs in July for the WBA title. Can Fletcher win over Jacobs?

Daniel Jacobs is one of the best middleweights in the world and at this stage of Jarrod Fletcher’s career, the American deserves to start favorite. I would expect Fletcher to give Jacobs a tough fight.

You are now 40 years of age. How many fights left for Sam Soliman?

After my win over Sturm I feel there are several fights against the best middleweights left in Sam Soliman. I’m showing no signs of slowing down.
