WBC light flyweight Champion Edgar Sosa and challenger Carlos”Shangai” Melo met for the first time yesterday at a press conference in Mexico City in a preview of their clash on Saturday. Sosa (35-5, 19 KOs), cheered on by his fans, expressed respect for his challenger from Panama. “Melo has a difficult style and is very skilled,” said Sosa. “He is very quick and has never been stopped. I expect a very tactical fight, something of a puzzle that I have to figure out.”
For his part, #11 ranked challenger Melo (19-8, 2 KOs) expressed confidence. “Sosa has been fighting a lot of brawlers. I will throw him off his usual game and I think the difference will be my speed. I have had a lot of close decision losses in my career and I certainly hope that the judging will be fair and square because I plan on pulling off a big upset on Saturday.”
It will be champion Sosa’s ninth title defense in his two year reign.
The rest of the card, promoted by Fausto Daniel Garcia, will feature up and coming WBC International Youth Champion Reyes Sanchez defending his title against KO artist Rene”Chirizo” Gonzalez of Nicaragua in the lightweight class and prospect Daniel Estrada battling Carlos Velasquez of Nicaragua for the 135lb WBC Cabofe title.
