Former world champion Edgar Sosa (44-7, 27 KOs) squares off with Wilbert Uicab (33-6-1, 18 KOs) in an all-Mexican showdown at the Grand Oasis Hotel in Cancun on April 7th. The fight is being billed as a WBC flyweight title eliminator between WBC #2 and WBC flyweight International beltholder Sosa and WBC #5 and WBC silver titlist Uicab. Says co-promotor Ricardo Maldonado, “This bout is between two very talented boxers and it promises to be a real, all-out Mexican war that is as good as any world title fight. In fact, this bout is more competitive than many world title fights today.”
Sosa, 32, a former WBC jr flyweight champion, has racked up a 32-2 record since 2006 while the 28 year-old Uicab, nicknamed “Huracan” because of his brawling style, is 16-1 in the last 4 years of his career. The winner of this intriguing shootout will then become the main contender to longtime WBC flyweight titleholder, the formidable Pongsaklek Wonjonkam of Thailand.
Sosa lost a desicion to the Thai champion last October and is eager for a rematch. “I’ve learned from my mistakes and I’d love to get back in the ring with Pongsaklek,” comments the Mexico-city based boxer. But first Sosa will have to overcome a very high hurdle in Uicab who will have the advantage of fighting in his hometown of Cancun.
