Gert Strydom who trained Malcolm Klassen for his title winning fight against Cassius Baloyi is in serious condition in the Flora Clinic near Roodepoort after a stabbing incident at his home over the weekend. It has been reported that Strydom was confronted by robbers and has 13 stab wounds.
In November 2006 Strydom became chief trainer for Klassen when he beat Gairy St Clair for the IBF junior lightweight belt.
At the time trainer Manny Fernandez had to accompany his fighter Isaac Hlatshwayo to the US where he was scheduled to fight on the same night that Klassen challenged St Clair.
Klassen subsequently lost the belt to Mzonke Fana who was in turn defeated by Cassius Baloyi.
When Klassen challenged Baloyi, once again Strydom was asked to train Klassen as chief trainer Nick Durandt was in charge of both Baloyi and Klassen.
After having Klassen spending several weeks at his home in preparation for the Baloyi challenge he once again came up trumps as got the challenger into superb physical and mental condition for the fight.
On this performance Strydom must be the number one front runner for the Boxing SA trainer award this year.
