Adonis Stevenson Update

Update: All parties involved have stated that IBF super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has agreed to fight Adonis Stevenson. Stevenson responding to FightNews’ story on Facebook stated, “Adonis is going for the title shot with Carl Froch. The press conference is Friday.”

Meanwhile TVA reporter Nancy Audet spoke with Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn who said he expected a Froch-Stevenson in April or May. Bryant had been agreed to as an opponent for Stevenson when it looked that Hearn had secured an exemption from the IBF and by-passing his mandatory and going straight to a rematch with the Mikkel Kessler. So far Stevenson-Froch is anything but a done deal while the British promoter continues lobbying for an exemption from the IBF so his fighter could face off against Danish fighter. More is expected to be revealed at tomorrow’s press conference featuring Stevenson.

Fightnews Canada has learned that middleweight knockout artist David Lemieux (28-2, 27KOs) is out of the ESPN Friday Night Fights main event scheduled for February 8th due to a hand injury. Lemieux was expected to headline GYM’s Fast & Furious card at the Bell Centre versus Jose Miguel Torres (26-5, 23KOs).

In a somewhat surprising move, taking Lemieux’s place as the main event on ESPN will be super-middleweight Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16KOs) who according to a source is likely to face Rowland Bryant (16-2, 11KOs).

It’s a surprising move on several levels as Stevenson was expected to be fighting for the IBF title the next time he entered the ring. However it now appears that Carl Froch will be granted a rare exemption from the IBF allowing him to unify titles and rematch WBA champion Mikkel Kessler. Bryant as Stevenson’s opponent also comes as a bit of a stunner considering that he was rumoured to be facing Andre Dirrell January 19th.

The 33-year-old Bryant is coming off a decision loss to South African contender Thomas Oosthuizen this past August. Fightnews was unsuccessful reaching Yvon Michel but the promoter has scheduled a formal press conference to be held Friday morning featuring Adonis Stevenson.
