At the press conference today at the CINEMAXX in Krefeld, WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm and WBO super middleweight champion Karoly Balzsay spoke to the press about the big April 25 “Universum Champions Night” world title twinbill at the KönigPALAST. Sturm (31-2-1, 13 KOs) will defend against unbeaten WBC #6/WBA #14 Koji Sato (14-0, 13 KOs), while Balzsay (20-0, 14 KOs) will make his first defense against an opponent to be named.

“It’s a great thing when as of today already 3,500 tickets have been sold without any advertising,” said Sturm. “This is a great “home game” in a great arena. Even after my world championship fight against Sebastian Sylvester in the sold-out König-Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, I have enjoyed the great support here in my home region. The audience saw a great boxing match [against Sylvester] which was better than expected and I promise the same for Krefeld. My next opponent, Sato of Japan, has an insane KO-rate, but I think if I use my speed then that benefits me as I can control the fight. But, the man is not at the top of the world rankings without also being very dangerous.”

Sturm’s trainer Michael Timm added, “One can only be wary about this opponent from Japan. We do not know the Asian middleweight class so well, but the first videos have impressed us. This man will fight like a samurai. Certainly he will never quit and will give everything.“

Balszay stated, “After my world title win, all hell was let loose in Hungary. Three or four expected days with media commitments became nearly four weeks. My countrymen were all in a tizzy. Now after a short vacation, everything is back to normal and I’m again fully in training. I feel much looser now that I have reached my big goal. Each day I look forward to training and now I want more. Who my opponent in this first title defense I am curious to know!”

An opponent is expected to be announced in the next few days.

The undercard features an extremely interesting fight between unbeaten middleweights, Gennady Golovkin (15-0, 12 KOs) from the Spotlight Boxing-Team and Tarvis Simms (24-0-1, 11 KOs).

Popular heavyweight Markus Tomala (6-0, 3 KOs) will also see action.

More matchups will be announced in the coming days.
