The city and local boxing scene of Albuquerque, N.M., continues to mourn the death of its “hometown champion,” Johnny Tapia. Team Tapia has opened up their doors 24/7 for anyone wishing to stop by the gym to pay respects and share memories of the fallen fighter. Though funeral services are not yet final, a memorial has been set for Albuquerque’s largest venue, The Pit at UNM, for Sunday night, June 3. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and a public viewing will begin at 6:30 to 7:45, followed by an 8 p.m. memorial service. The Tapia team and family request fans and friends to “Please come and celebrate Johnny’s life and remember who Johnny truly was: a loving and caring person who represented Albuquerque and boxing to the fullest.. God bless all of you and thank you everyone for your support.” For updates on the memorial service, call 505-221-5694. - Chris Cozzone. Photo by Jose Leon Castillo
