Three time world champion Israel “El Magnifico” Vazquez (44-4, 32 KOs) of Mexico will take on two-division world champion, Rafael Marquez (38-5, 34 KOs) of Mexico on Saturday, May 22nd at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, CA on “Once and Four All.” Considered widely by many to be perhaps the greatest boxing trilogy of all time, these two great Mexican warriors will meet again for a fourth time in a 12 round bout in the featherweight division, which will be shown live on SHOWTIME and is being co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Gary Shaw Productions, Espinoza Boxing Promotions and Zanfer Promotions.
We recently caught up with Team Vazquez as they help prepare Israel Vazquez for his upcoming bout to get their take, here’s what they had to say:
Rudy Perez/trainer: “I feel this fight will be very similar to their other three fights, but more explosive and more spectacular. It’s going to be a tremendous fight for both of them; they know each other very well. Israel is going to be very well prepared and we’re looking to be triumphant. The preparation is going very well; he’s been sparring with Miguel Garcia from Oxnard who is on his run for a world title so the sparring is very demanding.”
Justin Fortune/trainer, strength and conditioning coach: “It’s going to be a very tough fight; I don’t like to make predictions, all I know is that we’re going to get Vazquez into ridiculously great shape, make him stronger and faster and he’ll be ready to go to war. Camp is going really well, Israel and I have worked together in the past so we know what to do. He always responds well, and he likes what we do when he see’s the improvements and the training we put him through so he’s really happy. In the previous camps that I worked with Vazquez, they were at another gym so I was more restricted on what I can do there. We’re at my gym now so it’s my conditioning and my training and it’s ten times better now, much more improved and much different. Rudy and I work well together, basically we have the same ideas as far as what needs to be done. Marquez is smart, strong and comes forward and he’s coming to fight, but this time you’ll see the best Vazquez and we’ll be very prepared.”
