As a way to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Tijuana’s Mayen Promotions once again presents a special all-female fight card this Wednesday night at the Las Pulgas night club in the heart of Tijuana’s Revolution Avenue. Last year, promoter Guillermo “Memo” Mayen pulled out all the stops as he tried to establish a Guinness world record when he featured a night full of ladies, from the fighters, to the announcers, trainers and referees as well as the princess of Mexico women’s boxing, Jackie Nava, as the interim boxing commissioner for the night. Mayen did not go all out this time but still opted to give the knowing Tijuana boxing audience a potential exciting night of boxing.
The fight card will be an international one when Westbury, New York’s by way of Jamaica Alicia “Slick) Ashley (19-9-1, 1KO) defends her WBC super-bantamweight title against hard hitting Mexican Zenny Sotomayor (10-5-2, 8KOs) of Los Mochis in a ten round championship contest. The forty-six year old Ashley is known as a superb boxer who captured the female 122 pound belt by defeating Christina Ruiz via unanimous decision back in 2011. Ashley has defended the title twice since, both times again by unanimous decisions, over Maria Elena Villalobos and Chanttall Martinez.
In Sotomayor, Ashley will face an experienced who already has challenged for a title once before, in her last fight against Katy Wilson Carrillo last May where Sotomayor was stopped in seven rounds in the Dominican Republic. Sotomayor has wins over Kareli Lopez, Diana “Mamba Negra” Gonzalez and Nora Cardoza.
The aforementioned Kareli Lopez (5-4-1, 1KO) of Los Mochis is also in town to test popular Tijuana fighter Kenia Enriquez (7-0, 4KOs) in the semi-main event six rounder. Enriquez, who is ranked as the #13 flyweight in the world by the WBC, is dropping down to 110 lbs. en route to the junior flyweight division where she feels she will have an advantage over her possible future opponents. Enriquez is coming off a fourth round TKO over Gloria Salas who had only been stopped once before by IBF junior flyweight champion Ava Knight. Enriquez took three more rounds to do it but was systematic in her breaking down of Salas who was more experienced with fights against Knight, Sindy Amador and current world champion Melissa McMorrow. Lopez is also much more weathered than the twenty-year old Enriquez with fights against world ranked females such as title challengers Linda Soto and Katia Gutierrez and the undefeated Jessica Nery Plata.
Also featured on the card will be Kenia’s sixteen year old sister Tania Enriquez in her pro debut as well as fellow Tijuana fighters Sandra “Perla Negra” Robles (4-1, 1KO) and Brenda Flores (5-1, 1KO).
Las Pulgas nightclub is located a five minute cab ride from the international border between San Diego and Tijuana. Tickets range from $7.50-$28.50.
