Despite reports of WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel defending against WBO interim bantam champ Eric Morel, the WBC has given its approval for Montiel to defend his green belt for the first time against former WBA super flyweight world champion Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico on July 17. Concepcion’s manager Carlos Gonzalez said Zanfer Boxing committed to a Montiel-Concepcion bout long before the WBO called a purse bid for Montiel-Morel on June 11 in New York City. “We understand that as WBO champion Montiel must face the interim champion at some point, but first he must comply with the fights agreed upon before the WBO auction,” said Gonzalez, who added that he is in regular contact with Zanfer and they are conscious of their commitment to Concepción. Meanwhile “El Torito” Concepcion is continuing to train to face Montiel on July 17. Nothing has been officially announced.
