Torres, Zamora win in Albuquerque

Ringside by Chris Cozzone

Topping off an uneventful card before a sparse crowd Friday night on the Johnny Tapia Presents card at the Crowne Plaza in Albuquerque, NM, both Josh “Pittbull” Torres (12-2-1, 5 Kos) and Joaquin Zamora (20-4-1, 12 Kos) picked up wins against opponents made to order. In the main event, Torres won a shutout decision over unwilling turtle-shelled Marcus Brashears (9-16-1, 2 Kos), of Amarillo, Texas. Scores were 80-72 x 3. In another less-than-thrilling eight-rounder, Zamora won a dull sparring session victory over Bernardo Guereca (17-18-1, 4 Kos), winning with scores of 79-72 x 3. On the undercard: In four rounds, Arturo Crespin (9-2-1, 4 Kos) went to war against overmatched Charles Alderete (1-3) at middleweight, overwhelming him through much of the five-plus rounds before Alderete’s corner threw in a multitude of white towels at 1:19 of the sixth. In a light-heavyweight four-rounder, Adrian Lopez (5-1-1, 1 KO) outboxed Ricky Villafuerte (0-2) for the second straight time, winning with scores of 40-36 x 3. In the only really competitive fight on the card, between debuting bantamweights, Brandon Munoz (0-0-1) and Julio Gomez (0-0-1) fought to a majority decision.
