TR re-signs Vanes, inks Martinez

USA Olympian and rising young contender Vanes ‘Nightmare’ Martirosyan of Glendale, Calif., has re-signed with Top Rank announced Bob Arum today. Martirosyan, 23, has a record of 27-0 with 17 knockouts. He is trained by Freddie Roach and handled by Shelly Finkel. Martirosyan is ranked WBO #3, WBC #5, IBF #8 and WBA #8 at 154 pounds. As an amateur Martirosyan represented the United States in the 2004 Olympics. “Vanes is definitely one of the future superstars in boxing,” Arum said. “We helped develop Vanes during his first five years. Now, with the coaching of the great Freddie Roach, Vanes will be heading to the top level of boxing.”
It was also announced that Christian Martinez, 22, of the Bronx, N.Y. signed a promotional contract with Top Rank. Martinez is a young super welterweight with a 3-0-0 record with 3 knockouts. As an amateur boxer, Martinez was in about 145 bouts and was a gold medalist in the New York Golden Gloves and the Empire State Games. He is managed by Craig Hamilton and advised by Anthony Catanzaro. Christian’s father, Edwin, is the chief trainer. Martinez, born in Puerto Rico, began boxing at the age of 10 at the Jerome Boxing Club in the Bronx, N.Y. He is scheduled to box on the Miguel Cotto vs. Yuri Foreman fight card at Yankee Stadium on June 5. “Fight fans are going to love Christian Martinez,” said Hamilton, who also manages John Duddy. “He is a big puncher, well-schooled and has a ton of amateur experience.”

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
