Truax defeats Reid

Photos and report by Jesse Kelley

“Golden” Caleb Truax (16-0-1) stopped Jonathan Reid (34-12) on Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis. After a cautious start by both fighters, Truax began to open up in the third round and never looked back, beating a game Reid to the punch with powerful uppercuts and straight rights. Truax dropped Reid with a right-left-right to the head midway through the 9th round. Reid, whose right eye was badly swollen, made it to his feet but was dropped moments later with a right to the body followed by a flurry of head shots before the referee stopped the fight at 2:29 of the ninth round. “I really worked on sitting down on my shots before the fight” said Truax.

“I had a great training camp coming into this fight and the focus on power paid off. I think I am a good boxer, that’s what I do but I wasn’t using my power before like I know I can. I hit him with some hard body shots and I thought I was going to get him out of there in the third and fourth but he was tough and I give him credit.”

In other action, lightweight Ismail Muwendo (7-0) knocked out Mike Maley (3-8) with a straight right to the head at 1:24 of the opening round.

Jeremy McLaurin (8-1) won an exciting 6 round split decision over Joel Flores (3-1). 60-55 and 58-55 for McLaurin, 57-56 for Flores John Schmidt (10-1) won a unanimous decision over Ryan Soft (2-2-1) in a middleweight bout. Scores read 59-55, 59-55, 58-56.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
