Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has been granted a visa from the Australian Government to visit the country for his Day of Champions tour in November. The decision follows the controversial back-track from Immigration Minister Kate Wilkinson to revoke a New Zealand visa granted to Tyson last week for the same tour. A second application for a New Zealand visa has been put forward to the Ministry of Immigration on behalf of Tyson. Tour promoter Max Markson said he was thrilled Tyson would be allowed into Australia for the first time. “We hope we will also receive good news about Tyson’s visit to New Zealand and are now patiently waiting on their response.” Wilkinson confirmed yesterday the Government would consider the reapplication after the Urban Maori Authority backed the visit in return for a guest appearance from Tyson at a south Auckland marae.
