The “open house” at the Universum-Gym in Hamburg was a resounding success. Enjoying the high late summer temperatures, more than 2000 fans streamed into the “hallowed halls” of the famed Universum stable. There were plenty of stars on hand. As part of the 25 year jubilee of Universum, founder Klaus-Peter Kohl wanted to hold a celebration for the fans. A number of boxers, including Ruslan Chagaev, Luan Krasniqi, Denis Boytsov, Ina Menzer and Susi Kentikian were on hand had to meet and greet the fans and sign lots of autographs.

Klaus-Peter Kohl: “I’m overwhelmed. I had not really expected so many fans. We need to do this again next year. We’ve run out of the autograph cards and we had to order more drinks and grilled sausages. A great day!”

The boxers diligently worked the grill, pastry table and beer counter, with proceeds from drinks and food bringing in 2,174 euros (!), which will go to the Sternenbrücke Childrens Hospital in Hamburg.

Ruslan Chagaev: “I was sweating quite a lot. Not only was the grill very hot, so were the temperatures. But for the good cause and for the fans, we did this with pleasure!”

More than 70 children earned their “boxing diploma” by doing push-ups, chin-ups and medicine ball throwing. World champions Susi Kentikian and Ina Menzer offered to numerous children and boxing fans the unique opportunity to take a photo of themselves with authentic world championship belts.

Susi Kentikian: “It was so full at times that I couldn’t even move around. One great thing, now everyone wants to keep their fingers crossed for us for our fights in October.”

Ina Menzer managed to join the festivities even though she attended the wedding of her brother in Mönchengladbach (about 250 miles away) earlier in the day.

Denis Boytsov, Susi Kentikian and Ina Menzer headline the big Universum Champions Night show on October 10 in Rostock.

Fight fans attended the event from near and far. “I spoke with fans from Freiburg, Thuringia and the Hessians,” said Kohl. “This made me very happy. On to the next time!”

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
