Varner gets split nod over Cerrone

World Extreme Cagefighting made its return to California to host its first event of 2009 where lightweight champion Jamie Varner successfully defended his title for the second time against a very tough Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone after being hit with an illegal knee. After four round of furious action, a downed Varner ate a knee from the challenger that badly disoriented him. As Varner could no longer continue, the judges decided the fight giving Varner the split decision victory. Scores read 49-46 twice in favor of the champion Jamie Varner. The dissenting official scored the botu 48-46 in favor of the challenger.

In the WEC rematch of the year, “The California Kid” Urijah Faber used a well rounded attack to submit former UFC lightweight champion in the opening round with a guillotine choke. The official time of the tap was 1:34. Faber won a five round unanimous decision over Pulver in June of 2008.

On the undercard: Welterweight Danillo Villefort stopped Mike Campbell in the opening round with hard shots from the back position, with an official time of  3:53.

The WEC bantamweight division found a new contender as Jose Aldo displayed spectacular stand up skills to knock out Rolando Perez in the opening round with a hard knee to the head, official time of 4:15.

Welterweight Edgar Garcia blasted former title challenger Hiromitsu Miura in the first round with a wicked left-right combination, then finished him with strikes at 1:18 of the first round.

Scott Jorgensen wasted no time putting away Frank Gomez as he locked in a tight guillotine choke that finished his opponent at 1:09 of round one.

Jesse Lennox continued his welterweight win streak by stopping Blas Avena with a left hook, knee combination just 41 seconds into round two.

Bantamweight veteran Charlie Valencia scored a dominant three round unanimous decision over newcomer Seth Dikun, with scores of 30-27 x 3.

Featherweight Dominic Cruz was awarded a three round unanimous decision over Ian McCall, scores of 30-27 x 3.

Benson Henderson used a tight guillotine choke to submit Anthony Njokuani in the second round at :42.
