“Veneno” Rubio Update

By Gabriel F. Cordero

The WBC has given Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. until June 4, 2012 to make his mandatory defense against top rated middleweight Marco Antonio Rubio. But Rubio is growing tired of waiting and is frustrated that he can’t get his title shot sooner. “I’ve received no explanation why it is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has refused to face me for the WBC middleweight belt,” says Rubio. “I am the #1 mandatory challenger and for a long time, since before Chaver Jr was world champion. Chavez Jr has not given me an answer. I don’t understand why he doesn’t want to fight and says he will fight with Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez……all they are doing is lengthening his agony because sooner or later I’ll have an opportunity to get him in the ring and then nobody will be able to protect him.”

While he waits, Rubio could fight on September 3 against an opponent to be named. Ishmael Tetteh of Ghana has been mentioned as a possibility.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
