Danie Venter fighting at heavyweight smashed Nsitu Mbaya from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to defeat inside one round at the HTS School Hall in Pretoria on Saturday night. Venter a former Olympian and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and also former South African junior heavyweight champion was having his first fight since being knocked out in the final of the Super Eight tournament by Thabiso Mchunu in November last year.
Venter (98.48kg) came out slowly at the bell as he worked from behind the jab before landing a perfect left hook to the jaw that sent Mbaya (101.36kg) down and out. The referee did not pick up the count and waved the fight off at 2 minutes 54 seconds into the round. Venter improves his record to 15-6, 11 KOs and Mbaya’s reported record drops to 6-5-2.
