Vera Returns to the Turning Stone to defend title

ESPN Friday Night Fights returns to the Turning Stone Resort Casino on March 29th as newly crowned NABO middleweight champion Brian Vera (22-6-0, 13 KOs) of Austin, Texas defends his title against Donatas Bondorovas (17-3-1, 6 KOs) of Lithuania in the main event. Vera, the WBO #1 contender in the middleweight division, electrified the crowd at Turning Stone back on January 25th with his stunning upset tenth round knockout over former WBO jr middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk. Vera also holds an upset victory over “The Contender” star and former WBC jr middleweight champion Sergio Mora. Bondorovas, who relocated to Chicago during 2009 and is on a five-bout winning streak, hopes to pull off an upset himself over his formidable opponent.

The co-main event features WBO Latino light heavyweight titleholder Jackson Junior (14-0, 12 KOs) of Sao Paulo, Brazil defending his title against Cuban-born Umberto Savigne (10-1, 7 KOs). Junior made his American debut January 25th at the Turning Stone, scoring a first round knockout victory over 2000 U.S. Olympian Dante Craig. Savigne has an outstanding amateur record, including winning a gold medal for Cuba at the 1999 Pan American Games.

The undercard will feature several bouts showcasing top local talent.

Doors open at 6:30p and the first bout starts at 7:30p. Tickets range from $25 to $70 and available at the Turning Stone box office (315-361-7469) or at

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
