Vicente edges Lorenzo

By Robert Coster

It was billed as a Dominican “Civil War” and it turned out to be exactly that. A war. Former Jr lightweight contender Francisco Lorenzo, 130, and prospect Jenifel Vicente, 127, battered each other for 10 rounds, bringing the crowd at the Teo Cruz Coliseum in Santo Domingo to its feet. The early part of the incredibly violent slugfest belonged to the veteran Lorenzo (34-7, 15 KOs), much more pedigreed than his young opponent. Vicente (15-0-2, 9 KOs) however turned things around in the second portion of the bout as the older fighter began to tire. The fight was up for grabs until the last round and Vicente just did a little more in the last minutes to escape with a razor thin split decision. It was a memorable battle that will have Dominican fans talking for a while. Also on the seven-bout card offered by Manguita Promotions, jr welterweight prospect Julio Reyes (13-0) won a rather controversial 8th round TKO over unlucky Franklin Gonzalez (12-2).

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
