Villanueva stays unbeaten with decision over ex-title challenger “Chicano” Rivera

The summer season of the popular series Boxeo Telemundo Ford kicked off Friday night at the El Plaza Condesa in Mexico City. In the main event, undefeated prospect Matt “Mighty” Villanueva (10-0-1, 8 KOs) from Burbank, California scored a ten round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Julian “Chicano” Rivera (12-8-1, 2 KOs) to claim the vacant WBO Latino super flyweight title.

In a surprise, flyweight Salvador “Pelon” Juarez (2-4-2, 1 KO) scored his first career KO against Carlos Barraza (13-3-1, 4 KOs). A clean uppercut laid out Barraza in round two.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
